He undertook two years of research, gaining an MD degree and has published widely in the medical and plastic surgery journals. He completed his specialist training in Plastic Surgery in Edinburgh, and Glasgow (Canniesburn), and undertook an Oncoplastic/Microsurgical Reconstructive Breast Fellowship in Newcastle. He also completed a Cosmetic Fellowship at the Institute of Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery in London, working with Jan Stanek ('10 Years Younger','Plastic Fantastic'), Dai Davis and Nick Percival ('Plastic Surgery School, Extreme Makeover,' Make Me Perfect'), appearing in episodes of Channel 4’s ‘10 Years Younger’ and ‘Embarrassing Bodies’.
He is a full member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), and has an interest in a wide range of cosmetic and aesthetic procedures including rhinoplasty (nose surgery), abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast reduction and augmentation, correction of prominent ears as well as facial rejuvenation with Botox and fillers. Outside of medicine, Hilal enjoys playing football, volleyball, electric guitar, saxophone and drums and has a keen interest in photography and fine art. He is also an Honorary Senior Surgical Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh.
