"Before the operation, all my consultations with my surgeon gave me
every confidence in the outcome. This isn't like having your tonsils out
– I realised it was 'big'. In my consultations I had everything explained to
me and I knew the score.
I also needed a hernia repair, but the key question anyone should ask
themselves is 'do I really want to do this?' If the answer is 'yes', you can
expect first-class pre-op care and understanding of your needs and anxieties.
Just before the procedure, I felt comfortable with everyone around me. There
were high standards of hygiene plus professionalism in terms of the staff
reassuring me.
Then I woke up! Not a great time in my life, but again, the staff kept checking
on me and reassuring me. The next day, once the anaesthetic wore off, I felt
much better. I started to eat and drink and the facilities at Spire Murrayfield
were superb. Not just in terms of my room, but the vigilance of the nursing staff.
I spent six days in hospital and was grateful I wasn't rushed home. I went home
when I felt the time was right. It was like being in a hotel with great service, even
greater nursing staff, and a consultant who checks on you all the time.
When recovering at home, I recommend putting your makeup on as quickly as
possible. You may not want to go out every day, but feeling good about yourself will help.
Six months on, I'm confident and happy. The other day, someone asked me, was it the
right thing to do. I said 'yes'. A big thank you to all the staff”.
