Breast Reduction
Getting back to normal

After discharge from the hospital, you should relax at home and not undertake activities such as heavy lifting, stretching, or pulling for the first six weeks. You should not drive until you are confident that you are in full control of the car and pain-free when wearing the seatbelt and operating the vehicle. We advise that you have someone to collect you on the day of discharge and to help you at home for the first few days. You might need someone else to look after children or pets.

You should also avoid strenuous exercise such as swimming, running and weight-training for six weeks after surgery. How long you need to take off work depends on the nature of your work. However, you should expect to take at least two to three weeks off in normal circumstances.

We are likely to ask you to wear a soft, stretchy sports bra with no under-wiring for six to twelve weeks after the surgery. This will support the breast tissue during the healing process. Your nurse can check your bra fitting before you go home. As your swelling subsides, you may need to be refitted.
